Warren and I are in New Mexico to visit Warren's parents and other family. It's been a totally different kind of wildflower adventure here in the southwest desert! The following pictures are from our drive down through eastern New Mexico on our way to Cloudcroft.
Bindweed; we used to call this "Morning Glory" when we were kids. |
one variety of Yucca that was smaller |
Prickly Poppy |
a type of gourd vine that was everywhere |
Purple Thistle; the flower book calls this Bull Thistle or Cirsium vulgare |
I haven't found the name of this yet; maybe a type of thistle or nightshade? |
If any of my faithful readers can help me identify this, give me a holler! |
Apricot Mallow |
Cholla cactus; I had Warren stop so I could take a picture of the "yellow flowers,"
but discovered that it was just new growth on the plant (or maybe dead?) |
This is very representative of the landscape we saw on Wednesday. This is near where the road crossed the Pecos River! |
Prickly Pear cactus with lots of buds; we might get to see some in bloom while we are here! |
We really hit it right for catching the yucca in bloom right now. As we went further south the yucca started looking more like this:
New Mexico is experiencing drought conditions right now, so everything is VERY dry. Still, there were little blossoms along the road, getting by with very little moisture. I haven't been able to identify these, but you can have a look.
It was 103 degrees outside the car when I took these photos! It was breezy and dry and you didn't really feel it just standing there. Now, working or exercising in it would be a different story!
